EMV Chip Card Information

Greenleaf Wayside Bank will soon be implementing EMV microchip technology in our debit cards to increase the security of transactions.  EMV (Europay, MasterCard®, Visa®) heightens card security by encrypting your card information, making it more difficult to compromise.  The card's small microchip provides greater protection for you by reducing the likelihood of fraud and giving you peace of mind.

In the near future, you will be receiving a new debit card equipped with an EMV chip.  GWB is working closely with our card processors and anticipate reissuance to begin in October 2016.  Until then, please know that your current card, with a traditional magnetic strip, is secure.  You are protected by the MasterCard Zero Liability policy, which means your liability for unauthorized transactions is $0.  You may notice that merchants are gradually upgrading their payment terminals to accept both magnetic strip cards and those with EMV chips.

What are Enhanced Security Chip Cards?

A chip card - also called a smart card or an EMV card - is a credit or debit card that contains a microprocessor that enhances the security of cards during point-of-sale transactions.  These cards, already in use in much of the world, use a security standard originally developed by Europay, MasterCard and Visa (EMV) as a way to fight card fraud resulting from theft, skimming and counterfeiting.  The EMV technology has been adopted by the other major card brands and issuers.

Are chip cards more secure than my current card?

Yes.  Chip cards add an additional layer of security to the safeguards that already protect your card.  Each time you use your chip card, it generates a code that is unique to that transaction.  This makes it harder to counterfeit your card or to use it fraudulently for in-store purchases.

When will the change happen?

Even though the chip cards have started being issued in the U.S. and some merchants have already installed chip-enabled card terminals for payment, the entire conversion process is expected to take a few years to complete. That's why chip cards will continue to have a magnetic stripe on the back.  That way, if a merchant's terminal or an ATM is not yet chip-enabled, your transaction can still be processed using the magnetic stripe as it is today.

When will I receive my chip card?

Chip Debit Cards - You'll automatically receive your new chip card in the mail the month that your current card is set to expire (Example - card expires in October of any year, you will receive your chip card October of this year).  There is no need to request a new card.  There is no extra charge for the new chip card.  If you are planning to travel internationally or have an immediate need for a chip card, please contact us at 920-864-7901.  Fees for early issuance will apply.

How am I protected?

All debit cards that we issue come with 'zero liability protection', so you are not held liable for unauthorized transactions if a card is stolen, lost or fraudulently used at a merchant or online.  It is important that you promptly report a lost or stolen card or any suspicious transactions.  See the applicable agreement for your account on liability and reporting requirements for unauthorized transactions.

What information is on the chip?

The chip contains information about your account and the card expiration date.  It also generates a unique code for every transaction when used with a chip-enabled terminal at the point of sale.

How do I use them?

When used at merchants with chip-enabled card terminals it's as easy as:  1.  Insert the card, face up and chip end first, into the terminal.  2.  Leave the card in the terminal during the entire transaction.  3.  Follow the instructions on the screen and either sign or enter your PIN as needed.  Be sure to remove your card and take your receipt when the transaction is complete.  For merchants without chip-enabled terminals, you will 'swipe' your card through the terminal, just as you do today.

Can I use my chip card anywhere?

Yes.  Your chip card can be used virtually anywhere this brand of card is accepted in the U.S. and around the world.  If a merchant has a chip-enabled card terminal, you will insert your card during the transaction.  In the U.S., you will still be able to 'swipe' your card to make your payment if a merchant has a regular terminal.  You will need a PIN to be able to make a transaction at an ATM.

Do I need to sign the back of the card?

Yes.  You still need to sign the back of your card.

Can I use it to make purchases online or by phone?

Yes.  You can use your chip card to make these purchases as you do today.

Can I use my card at an ATM?

Yes.  For ATM transactions, insert your card into terminal and follow the instructions on the screen.  Depending on the type of ATM, you might be prompted to re-insert your card.  Leave the card in the ATM until the transaction is complete and the card is released, and then remove your card and any money you might have withdrawn.

What is the difference between chip and signature and chip and PIN?

You may be asked to provide your signature or enter your PIN to complete a transaction when you use your card.  You will need to use your PIN at ATMs and it may be required at some unattended terminals such as fuel pumps and payment kiosks.

What if my card is lost or stolen?

It's important to report a lost or stolen card immediately.  Keep a record of the telephone number on the back of your card and call it if necessary.

Is my new chip card contactless?

At this time, your new chip card cannot be used for contactless payments.

Will chip cards prevent data breaches?

While chip cards won't prevent the types of large-scale data breaches that have hit some merchants, they do make it extremely difficult to produce counterfeit cards from that stolen data.

Greenleaf Wayside Bank's Debit MasterCard®

Now anywhere you see MasterCard®, Cirrus or Plus symbols, you can use your Greenleaf Wayside Bank debit MasterCard®. The debit MasterCard® is accepted anywhere that debit MasterCard® is welcome. When using the debit MasterCard®, the money paid for goods or services comes directly from your checking account without having to write a check. You will get a receipt for your transaction and all transactions will appear on your monthly bank statement.

Using Greenleaf Wayside Bankís debit MasterCard® is quicker than writing a check, much safer than carrying cash and more convenient than carrying a checkbook. Use your debit MasterCard® at the gas station, when you are out of town, at your favorite restaurant, or when shopping online or by phone.

 

ATM Access

Your Greenleaf Wayside Bank debit MasterCard® is also your ATM card for cash and other banking services. All existing rules and services provided to you by your ATM card are offered through your debit card. You have 24-hour access to your checking or savings account simply by inserting your debit card into the ATM, and entering your PIN (personal identification number).

How does my Greenleaf Wayside Bank debit MasterCard work?
It works just like a regular ATM card at ATMs-just use it with your PIN to get cash and perform other banking functions. At stores, restaurants, and other merchants-wherever MasterCard is accepted-it works just like cash or a check. Just present the card to the cashier, sign the receipt, and your purchase amount will be automatically deducted from your checking account, usually within one or two days. You can also use your Greenleaf Wayside Bank debit MasterCard to make purchases over the phone, by mail, or over the internet. Just provide your card number and expiration date.

 

So when I shop with the Greenleaf Wayside Bank debit MasterCard, I use it like any other MasterCard, right?
Right! Your Greenleaf Wayside Bank debit MasterCard will be accepted by merchants just like any MasterCard card. When you use a debit MasterCard purchases are deducted right from your checking account-which means you donít pay interest charges on the things you buy (unless you access an overdraft line of credit)

 

Can I use my Greenleaf Wayside Bank debit MasterCard anywhere?
You can also use your new Greenleaf Wayside Bank debit MasterCard to get cash and perform other banking functions at ATMs displaying any of the logos on the back of your card. You can also use it to shop wherever you see the MasterCard logo at our 24 million merchant locations worldwide.

 

Will my Greenleaf Wayside Bank debit MasterCard purchases appear on my monthly account statement?
Yes. If you shop with your Greenleaf Wayside Bank debit MasterCard the amount, date, and even the name of the place where you used it will appear on your statement, along with any checks you write as well as your ATM transactions. Having all your transactions on one statement helps you keep better track of your spending.

 

Can I still use my checks when I shop?
Thatís completely up to you. Although once you see how much more convenient it is to shop with your Greenleaf Wayside Bank debit MasterCard, youíll probably use checks less and less. Of course, your debit MasterCard may be accepted at many places where your personal checks are not.

Your Greenleaf Wayside Bank debit MasterCard is faster and easier to use, because it lets you access your checking account without taking the time to write a check and hassle with personal identification. What are the daily limits on purchases and cash advances made with the Greenleaf Wayside Bank debit MasterCard?
You may make a number of purchases daily with your Greenleaf Wayside Bank debit MasterCard up to your daily spending limit or your available balance, whichever is lower.

 

Am I protected if my Greenleaf Wayside Bank debit MasterCard is lost or stolen?
Weíll cancel the account to prevent misuse of the card and issue you a replacement card. By reporting the loss or theft, you will have zero liability for any unauthorized purchases*

You must activate your card by calling the vru # 1-800-862-0760, then you can use your Greenleaf Wayside Bank debit MasterCard to make purchases and to get cash and perform other banking functions at ATMs. Please have your card information ready when you call.

 

What do I tell the merchant when they ask me is this a credit or a debit?
We prefer to have all transactions ran through as a CREDIT transaction so you simply sign for your purchase. However, whether you say debit or credit, remember that the money will always come out of your checking account.

 

Do I need a PIN when I use the card in a store or restaurant?
No. Just sign your sales receipt, as you would when using a credit card.

 

Is there a charge for this service?
We offer the debit MasterCard as a convenience to all our customers at no charge at this time.

 

I didnít get my card. What do I do?

My husband & I each received a card with different numbers. Which is correct? Can we use them both?
They are both correct. You each need to use the card that has your name embossed on the face. Each card holder has their own unique debit MasterCard this is in case either card is lost, stolen or simply not working the other account holder still has the convenience of using their card while a replacement card is ordered.

 

I donít use the ATM for cash.
You can still use your debit MasterCard for purchases at merchants or to pay at the pump. You donít need to worry about remembering your PIN because the merchant only asks for your signature on the transaction. There are merchants (i.e...Walmart, Sam's Club and ALDI) that require any debit card transactions to use a PIN. These are very rare.
